Use your previous passcode within 72 hours

If you forgot a newly changed passcode, use the previous passcode within 72 hours when the device is eligible.

Apple provides this path to regain access and set a new passcode without erasing the device.

When this helps

This requires iOS 17 or later, being within 72 hours of the passcode change, and knowing the previous passcode.

STEPS

How to do it

  1. 1

    Show Forgot Passcode

After incorrect attempts cause the device-unavailable screen to appear, tap Forgot Passcode?.

  2. 2

    Use the previous passcode

Choose Enter Previous Passcode and enter the passcode you used before the change.

  3. 3

    Set a new passcode

Follow the onscreen instructions to set a new passcode.

When you are done

You are done when the previous passcode is accepted and you set a new passcode.

Good to know

If more than 72 hours have passed or the Forgot Passcode flow is unavailable, this method cannot resolve the lockout.
